Should people on welfare have to work for their checks?

They could do the jobs illegals are doing.
Answer:
Oh yes. There are so many community service activies that can be done. The hard thing would be to get them motivated to do a good job, that's why they are on welfar in the first place, you know.
Yes, there are plenty of things that can be done around most communities. Make them sweep sidewalks, paint fire hydrants, weed city gardens, paint city buildings, or some other task. I see no harm in making them work for their keep.
Yes

I made a case for something similiar not long ago. I suggest that we bring back indentured servitude of sorts.

Every tax-paying American should be given a welfare recipient to do our bidding until such time as they are able to support themselves.
If they can not be a productive part of society then let them have their welfare. Only they should be sterilized.
If they were employed, they wouldn't be on welfare, now would they?
Often, people are unemployable or disabled, and that is why they are on welfare.
The jobs the "illegals" are doing are not accounted for, since they are "illegals". They do not receive a legal wage for their work, they have no status or rights, etc.
Is this what you want for people who are disadvantaged or in unfortunate circumstances? Don't be so quick to judge or condemn others? You and the others who answered so harshly, may find yourselves in this situation someday; you are 1 paycheck away from the same fate.
Some people do have to work when on certain programs. For the nine months that I was on Calworks, I worked 32 hours a week as a TA at an elementary school. I received 350 a month and medi-cal. I did not receive food stamps. Most people figure out ways around this. There are plenty of jobs that they can do. If they want the welfare money they should be able to work for it, one way or another, whether it is cleaning up around town, as previously suggested, or as a volunteer in a community based group or library.
Honestly, I do not know how the welfare system works now. Before Clinton "Fixed" the welfare system, I knew this one who actually bragged that she could work, but decided not to because she gets a check for doing nothing. She is angry with everyone because her life has gone no where, but there are people like that.

I agree, If they are able they should be forced to work. THere is a labor shortage in California. We pay illegal immigrants over $10 an hour and still can't hire enough illegal immigrants for farm work. Its hard work, but the pay is with in reasonable to survive on.
Most definitely.
No, it wouldn't be called Welfare.
YES! If the person is mentally and physically able. Most people i know that are on welfare are just to lazy to work, or they're on drugs.
